Coronavirus positives and negatives for music business

With many across the country ordered to stay at home during the coronavirus pandemic, WordPlay T. Jay is taking a minute to look at how the music industry is being affected.
There are, in his eyes, a number of positives and negatives. On the negative side:
• The live performance and tour industries are being affected
• Festivals are being canceled or postponed
• Music conventions are being canceled or postponed
• Musicians are not collaborating live
Because of social distancing orders, the music industry, which thrives on concerts and shows, is struggling in that regard because people cannot gather like normal.
This also affects more than just artists. Gig players, who perform with different artists and specialize on a certain instruments, are out of work with no live shows happening.
Furthermore, people who organize or plan shows, as well as promoters and stage crews are also out of work.
Many of those people work at festivals or conventions, many of which are not happening. This is also an area where fans find new artists and new music.
Conventions, such as the CDBaby conventions may or may not happen, as well. The U.S. convention is in Austin in August.
Finally, collaborations are not happening because people can’t be in the studios, so it’s tougher to make new music.
While there are negatives to what is going on, there are many more positives:
• The stay at home order are forcing musicians to get creative and connect with fans in different ways
• Fans are streaming more music at home
• Musicians can put a greater focus on the business and marketing
• Musicians can write and record
“It’s encouraging to see musicians put themselves out there in new ways,” T. Jay said. “Fans are also able to interact with musicians more, and dive in to getting to know new musicians.”
It is also a great time to build social media posts and create marketing strategies. Artists can also make new content and have time to sit and think and not make new things too hastily.
“Make new music and create something that will take hold and catch fire,” T. Jay said. “It’s the perfect time to spread your wings and put in your reps.”
