WordPlay T. Jay is an independent hip-hop artist, producer, and creative entrepreneur whose catalog centers on what he calls “Music for the Underdog”. He makes storytelling-driven hip-hop about perseverance, identity, and building your own lane.
Born and raised in Little Rock, Arkansas, T. Jay began making music as a teenager at Little Rock Central High School. His first studio experience came singing hooks for the group Da Ink, but he quickly gravitated toward production and began creating his own records. Early independent releases helped him build a grassroots fanbase, including the single “Haterade,” which he distributed by hand to friends and classmates.
One of his first major breaks came when his track “The South” earned radio play and won the “Hottest in the Rock” contest on Little Rock station Hot 96.5. Around the same time, a failed attempt to submit music directly to Def Jam — where he briefly handed a demo to Russell Simmons before being turned away for lacking copyright registration — pushed him to formalize his independent ambitions. In 2005, he founded On The Map Music Group, the platform that would house his music and entrepreneurial projects.
After early albums including Hustler’s Ambition (2007) and It Was Written (2008), T. Jay relocated to Fayetteville, Arkansas, where he became active in the local scene and co-hosted the college radio show “The Concrete Schoolyard” on KXUA 88.3. During this period, he refined his production skills and immersed himself deeper into hip-hop culture.
National attention arrived in 2010 with “Breakfast and Biggie,” a single from his mixtape Nothin’ Less. The track spread through DJ networks and reached radio stations in markets including Oakland, Charlotte, Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York. The song and video were later featured on MTV’s RapFix Live, where they received commentary from Ja Rule and Sway Calloway.
Over the following decade, T. Jay continued building a fully independent catalog with albums including 72701 Stories (2013), The Cycle (2014), Job Application (2016), Orientation Day (2018), and Overtime (2020). Together, these releases formed a thematic trilogy exploring the tension between working a traditional job and pursuing creative ambition.
Beyond music, T. Jay expanded into media and education. He co-founded the No Rhyme or Reason Podcast with collaborator Icarus Gray. He launched the YouTube series Music Advice by WordPlay T. Jay, where he shares practical strategies for independent artists navigating the music industry. He is also the author of Fake Blues: Creating in the Face of Anxiety, a book about creativity and mental health.
His ninth studio album, Terry (2023), marked one of the most personal chapters of his career. On the record, WordPlay T. Jay explores the stories that shaped the person he is today. He shares stories about trauma, domestic abuse, divorce, and the ways he coped through it all. Utilizing rich samples of live instrumentation, loops, and drum patterns, T. Jay demonstrates his ability to produce with both digital and live instrumentation while delivering nostalgic storytelling.
