Q&A with WordPlay T. Jay

WordPlay T. Jay’s music advice YouTube page gets a lot of questions in the comments section, and the following hopefully sheds some light on issues people watching his videos have come across.

Q: Maria said: “My name is Maria and my nickname is Mari/Mary and i don’t have a stage name :( like i want something short but also something that makes me unique yk. But like a normal name like ariana grande, bilie eilish, lady gaga etc and not those names like thatgirlmary etc :/

Idk

(I sing pop btw)”

A: Maybe you can do Mari and pick a fake last name. That's how I would do that one.

Q: AyeKplayDat asked, “Great video! Does DistroLock work for unreleased music? I want to post beats on YouTube with a link to my Beatstars allowing customers to get Free “Non Exclusive” Downloads of certain beats. I know they’ll probably try to upload to streaming services etc.. So just wondering how, and if this Lock service protects that.”

A: That's a great question. I don't think it does, but this is how you can tweak it...maybe... Release on Spotify only as a "beat tape" then use Distrolock. Maybe that's a better option.

Q: john luck asked: “How to create a Wikipedia page for musicians..??”

A: Made that video check out the main channel.

Q: The French Kut asked: “This is helpful. I still a little confusion on the sound exchange part. How do you define the rights owner? Does the artist own it if he or she is just the writer? I’m asking from a producer perspective. When I upload to sound exchange I enter me as rights owner. Is that wrong?”

A: The rights owner is the owner of the final song...so as a producer if you’re leasing beats the owner of the final song is up to how you write your contracts. Usually the artist ends up being the rights owner. Soundexchange is best when you release your own music. Find artists to feature on beats you made and put it out or release beat tapes.

Q: GFM Corp asked: “I have a question, let's say I just relocated in the usa as a foreign artist singing in a foreign language, can I still protect my music sounds and lyrics with usa institutions ?”

A: If you have a TIN/EIN or social security number. Are your parents here or are you new to the US? If you are brand new to the US, I believe you need one of those numbers before you can sign up officially.
