Releasing a single? Here’s how to make the most out of it

Artists will do what they do best — create music — but what’s the best way to release a single and get the most attention for it as possible?

WordPlay T. Jay has a 6-step guide for how to make the strongest promotions, as marketing new creations is just as important as making them.

“Most musicians are not prepared to promote,” T. Jay said. “They like to create, but marketing is a big part of the business, too.”

A free guide to marketing new singles is available on T. Jay’s website, and here’s a breakdown of some oft he tips inside.

1. Collect your content

Some artists think they need to create original content for every post on social media, but that’s not necessarily the case. A better idea is to collect content as you go though the process.

Do things like filming or photographing your recording process and any other relevant things along the way to creating the music.

2. Cut into micro-content

This is where you get the best bang for your buck on the content you’ve collected. If you have, for instance, a 10-minute video of you writing or recording, use websites like Canva.com or other free video editing apps to cut pieces from the full video out into separate, smaller bits.

You can also vary formats, like 9:16 for Instagram or Facebook stories, 1:1 for Instagram posts, or 16:9 for YouTube or any other traditional horizontal video outlet.

Try to keep these micro-content pieces at 15, 30 or 60 seconds long, and create multiple to use across your social media platforms.

T. Jay also recommends organizing the micro-content in one location on your computer, phone or cloud-based service, like Google Drive or iCloud, where you can create folders and keep things in place.

3. Schedule distribution

Once you have your micro-content ready, schedule it for distribution on social media: Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, TikTok, etc.

You don’t have to post everything immediately. In fact, it’s better to spread posts out and even set them to post in the future using Insta, Facebook or third-party scheduling apps, such as Buffer or TweetDeck.

Once you start doing this, you can build a system for promotion that will become clockwork.

4. Use third-party promotions

Don’t forget other ways to promote, like making a music video or using Pandora AMP. Ask your friends, family and fans to add your tracks to playlists and make weekly content to share your story.

5. Use Facebook ads

A great way to promote through Facebook is with the ad platform. This will help you get more eyes and build an audience and fanbase.
