The Road to Terry - 067 - Batman Changed My Life

So, I’ve just begun mixing my album, terry and this is not where we started. About 2 years ago, I sat down with Kevin Shintaku, Matthew Price, and Thomas Horn to create the sound bed for my new record.

These are the same guys that I just recorded a Tiny Desk Contest with for my single “Jam”. The first day was interesting to say the least.  There was equipment we spent hours troubleshooting and a process that was more than new to me.  I have never organized a group of musicians on my own to do music for an album.

Though I had no idea what I was doing, we charged on. After messing around for some time, we landed on a track I had lying around called 2021021 aka Batman Car.  I called it that because the D minor chords you hear in the background feel like what Bruce Wayne would play on the way out into Gotham.

The beat also reminds me of my own connection to Batman.  Since a kid I’ve been a fan of the Dark Knight. So much so that one of my Christmas gifts was a 1992 Batman Returns Batmobile toy. I cherished that toy until it was taken away from me.

The song is the story of how that toy got taken away and the rest of the events that occurred that winter. The trauma that me and my family had to overcome is more than just this toy but yet the car is the starting point for me.

I use this song to explain how I’ve overcome all of that and how listeners can overcome it as well. This is the first verse that explains my journey to where I am now. Get ready for my 9th album, terry, as I tell the stories of my life until now.
