The Road to Terry - 042 - 2021 Flow

Every album cycle there are ebbs and flows. I retreat into a phase where nothing creative comes out of me. Last year was one of those times. It’s true I put out an album. That album was mostly completed before 2020. In 2019, I made about 70 tracks. That’s significantly less that my typical year, but way more than this year. This year I’ve made 17.

If you compare that to my years of flow, you’ll see that it’s not even close. I typically create about 80-100 instrumentals. Out of those, 20% make it to the writing phase. Typically half of those records are released. I need my flow years.

2020 is not reduced because of the pandemic, it’s primarily because I’ve taken on new roles at school. It’s been important for me to be a part of that work. My creative work has taken a backseat, but I’m ready to flow again.

It’s a trickle right now. I feel it in my veins. High school was my most prolific. The Kanye line where he says “5 beats a day for 3 summers”…that’s not an exaggeration. Except I would make 1 every weekday and 5 on the weekends. I won’t be that productive, but I’m itching to get close.
