The Road to Terry - 057 - What's a Classic?

Today I’m headed to the farm to work with a few folx (why I say folx) on my next project. It’s been a while since I’ve began a new album. I started on Overtime about 4 years ago. Now today I’m going to work on my attempt at a classic. They say when you chase a classic you end up not making one. It’s the Pink Elephant I talked about in 054. I’m more logical than that. Things do have formulas and they also have feelings.

When I think back to the classic albums I like, they all feel like they took a lifetime to make. Icarus Gray, my co-host on No Rhyme or Reason, says my classic was my album Nothin’ Less for that reason. I don’t agree. As revealing as that album is, it’s not the whole story. I’ve been saving the story for my big break, not realizing that I needed to go ahead and let it out.

There albums where I feel like a fly on the wall. Blueprint, illmatic, Good Kid MAAD City, Get Rich or Die Trying, The Score, Hotter Than July, …To Be Continued, Word of Mouf, & the list continues.

That’s what I’m setting out to to make. The challenge is not forcing it but feeling it.
